Insurance
Many players are offered “even money” for their blackjack when the dealer has an ace showing. This is actually a form of insurance that will pay you about half of your initial bet. The dealer will examine the hole card. If they have a ten underneath the card, you will get your original bet back. You lose your insurance bet if do not. Insurance is not a wise investment even when they provide “even money.” Even if the odds are in your favor it is not advisable to purchase insurance.
Splitting
Splitting pairs in blackjack is a defensive strategy which can cut down on losses for players at a disadvantage if the dealer has an impressive upcard. Splitting pairs of tens and aces is recommended however, not pairs of fives or aces.
It is important to know the right time to split and when not split. Some pair splits are governed by hard and fast rules, and must be followed as minimally as possible, such splitting twos and triples if the dealer holds a low card.
Other splits of pairs are less obvious, such as splitting a pair of eights and should not be re-split if the dealer has a nine or greater. This is a risky method that could result in huge losses.
Double down
